New Location of Museum
New Site of Sweetwater Museum

On October 11, 2003 a statue of John Wesley Powell was unveiled.

This 9 foot tall representation of Powell marks the place where
Powell's expedition of the Green River began...right here in Green River.

We are grateful to the Sweetwater County Commissioners for their on-going support in renovating the Old Post Office building for a new museum. They have provided the lion’s share of the funding for the project.

However, we are also happy to report that the museum has other supporters as well. Recently the Sweetwater County Museum Foundation authorized expenditures of up to $12,000 to complete the painting and installation of the blinds on the main floor of the building. These items were not included in the scope of work established by the county and we are grateful to the Foundation for their assistance in this. In addition to raising their own funds with memorial brick sales and other projects, the Foundation has also accepted donations to the museum made by other organizations such as Washington Elementary, the Green River Historic Preservation Commission and individual donors in the community.

For more information see the Summer 2001 Newsletter.
