Sweetwater County Museum A view from the South Eastern corner of the Sweetwater County Historical Museum building on a bright sunshine filled day. Originally a red bricked 1930s post office today it houses the museum's staff and gallery.

Chinese History in Sweetwater County A photo of a previous iteration of our Chinese in Sweetwater County display. Elements of the altar from the Rock Springs Joss House, the eyes of the historic Rock Springs parade dragon, are still on display. The museum also has an Education Kit for classroom use on the Chinese Lunar New Year, check out the Education Kit section or this site or contact us to learn more.

Gift Shop The museum gift shop contains a changing variety of locally produced and historically themed items to help you find the perfect gift or souvenir. From books on local history to local fossils and much more, it's worth a stop to downtown for your next shopping trip.

Classes and Education Children sit in front of a tipi for our annual 3rd Grade History Fair. This hands on history event brings every 3rd grader in the county for a day of history and excitement. To learn more about this event please see the Outreach section of this site.

Statue of John Wesley Powell John Wesley Powell was an educator, a bureaucrat, an explorer, and much more. His famous Green River Expeditions started just a few blocks from the museum in Downtown Green River, in both 1869 and 1871. Come see his larger than life statue just outside the museum, and learn more inside the gallery.

Research Library & Archives A woman sits looking through museum resources in the museum research library. The museum hosts a collection of resources for researches from a collection of images to a research library. Whether you are a published author or a keen genealogist you can learn more about our research resources on the "research" section of this site.

John Wesley Powell...at night! John Wesley Powell's statue can appear even more imposing when lit up at night.

Book Signing with author Alethea Williams Local author Alethea Williams at a book signing. The museum's gift shop includes many authors and stories of local history.

International Day Fun! A kilt band marches through Bunning Park for the annual International Day celebration. International Day is the spiritual descendant of the historic International Night celebration.

The Reliance Tipple The Reliance tipple is the only such metal structure left in the state.

Sweetwater County Museum is Open as of June 15, 2020

The following guidelines are in place for all visitors and staff until public health orders are lifted. Please follow them while in the building.

Please be aware we are managing the number of visitors in the building at one time.

Please use hand sanitizer upon entering the building.

Please sign in to help with contact tracing if necessary.

Please use a face covering at all times while in the museum.

Please practice physical distancing and maintain 6 feet distance from other visitors and staff.

Please make sure to follow all signage, including marked directional arrows in the gallery.

Please use the elevator to access public bathrooms in the basement.

Use of the research library is by appointment only.

The museum gift shop is closed for browsing but staff is happy to assist with a purchase.
